Section 2 Transportation Professional of the Year



Section 2 is proud to nominate Jonathan E. Tibbitts, P.E. as our candidate for Statewide Transportation Professional of the Year.

Jonathan earned Associate Degrees in Civil Engineering Technology and Surveying Technology from  Mohawk Valley Community College in 1999 and 2000, respectively.  In 2001 he earned a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering Technology from SUNY Institute of Technology and graduated Magna Cum Laude.  He has been a New York State licensed Professional Engineer since 2008.

Jonathan began his professional career in transportation engineering in 2001 as an Assistant Civil Engineer with the Oneida County Department of Public Works.   During his 4 year tenure he participated in the planning, design, construction, inventory, and maintenance of the county owned transportation system. He assisted with developing and monitoring the county’s capital highway/bridge/culvert construction program.

Jonathan joined the NYSDOT in 2005 as a Junior Engineer in the Region 2 Design Group.  As a member of a highway design team, he participated in the delivery of various capital projects.  He was promoted to Civil Engineer 2 in 2008 and over the next 8 years lead design teams in both the highway and structures units to deliver various capital projects in Region 2 as well as Regions 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10.  Jonathan’s special assignments included serving on consultant selection committees, leading damage assessment teams after major storm events, and representing the NYSDOT at various recruitment events.

In 2016, Jonathan’s leadership role expanded when he was promoted to Professional Engineer 2.  As a Highway Design Teams Manager, he oversaw several design teams, providing engineering direction, resource management, mentoring/development of staff, and fostering professional relationships among many program areas and stakeholders. He supported the Regional Capital Program Committee (RCPC) and served on its sub-committees.  He also served as the Planning Section Chief in the Region’s Incident Command System (ICS) and as Logistics Section Chief during the Region’s COVID pandemic response.  In 2022 Jonathan accepted a Transportation Maintenance Engineer 1 position and assumed leadership of the Herkimer County Residency to the present time.

Jonathan has been a long time engaged member and supporter of NYSATE since joining in 2005.  He served as the Program Book Committee Chair for Conference 71 and is a member of the Technical Program and Transportation committees for Conference 82.  He has participated in numerous Sectional events and worked with other members to prepare and deliver engineering technician exam review classes in 2014, 2017, and 2023.  Jonathan strongly advocates for the organization in supporting the mission of NYSATE and the efforts of Section 2.

Jonathan’s professional related volunteer activities have included serving on the Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) Program Steering Committee (2018 – present); State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) fundraising coordinator (2005 – 2016); NYSDOT Employee Assistance Program (EAP) committee member (2011 – present); and as the Oneida County DPW United Way fundraising coordinator (2001 – 2005).

Jonathan is active in his community by volunteering his time and talents to the Village of Whitesboro Zoning Board of Appeals;  coaching youth sports (ice hockey, Pop Warner football, AYSO soccer, and Youth Association t-ball);  the Whitesboro Central School Booster Club; and to the Free & Accepted Masons and Clinton Senior Hockey League.

Jonathan is the father to Alex (20), Ava (18), Adeline (16), and Adler (13).
